Jordan's large egg
The Friday night set up started just before 6.30pm, well it did for some of us, some forgot all about it and left us to it while they sat snugly in front of a warm fire at home watching the tele, they know who they are! Joking aside this meeting was the Saturday before our senior club night because of Christmas and it caught them out, I hasten to add they were very apologetic when I rang them up and embarrassed them later that night, but they were there ready to start before the juniors arrived in the morning, I may remind them about this once in a while, as you do.
So despite it being rather chilly nearly all the members attended plus another new face, Alex's friend Thomas. They were all excited and ready to go, so much so that it was impossible to do the 5min chat before they started, pretty much totally ignored, are they trying to tell me something? I know they all had a news letter and know the date of the next meeting so the rest, well its just Mick rattling on and we want to get creative, can't blame the dear little souls can you? Poor young Blythe had a cold and wasn't at all well and couldn't make it, she so wanted to be there, never mind I'll make sure she turns a Penguin before the next meeting.
So what happened, well how much can you do in 5 minutes? Cos that's what it seemed like, no sooner had I started and it was time to pack up. Emily turned a two piece Penguin and Kim helped her paint it and put the eyes on it. Thomas turned a Tomato, yes you heard right, well Thomas doesn't like Mushrooms but he does like Tomatoes so a Tomato it was, cant argue with that, when turned it was over to Kim to help colour it and Angie had some small holly leaf stickers and they stuck two in the dip in the centre, very effective. Then it was Jordan's turn, he had been waiting patiently doing craft things and he as usual knew exactly what he wanted to turn, a big egg, big as in very big! The biggest piece of timber I had was a piece of 4" x 4" pine so away we went, Don explained the shape to us but Jordan wanted longer so longer it was, I have to say it worked so there you are, it doesn't hurt to try things, you never know. You see these juniors are already encouraging us……..turners to leave the comfort zone!
As usual I'm turning right up to the last minute and most of the other lathes are on their way to the store, and again as with the beginning I had a problem getting their attention to wind things up, they put all their creative things on the Gallery table today so we could all see what they did, the parents included, that's the parents could see to rather than the parents on the Gallery table! Hmmm, so with the last few things said they booked themselves out and ventured out into the cold. The Gallery table, well that was down to Jordan, he walked in first thing and asked were it was as he had things he wanted to show, so now we have a Gallery table, and quite right to.
Don, Angy, Kim, Eric, Dave & Dave, Ron, Ross and John plus myself were the keepers of the zoo today, a brilliant group of enthusiastic people, no proper game plan, just common sense and get on with what ever to suit, for example, Thomas turned a Tomato with me, kim helped him paint it, Angy had the green leaves, Thomas and Alex took the photo and Ron watched over them while they transferred it to a programme on the computer, ace, cool, not my style really is it? Obviously the others worked hard with the older ones, Dave did clock faces and things, the other Dave did pyrography, this is the most useful craft we have, they love it, Don I didn't get a chance to see and no photo's so sorry Don but you did get a mention, Eric did beads and coves I think as I have a picture, Angy craft things, seasonal of coarse and Ron and Ross kept an eye on the computer plus Ross did some pyrography, I think she has a flair for this, very effective plus colours. Kim, well Kim got coloured dye all over his fingers as I did and the others did what ever else was needed. Craig has with the help of his granddad made a tool stand for his turning tools; sadly the picture wasn't too good so I'll do that one next time. So there we are, our 6th would you believe it Saturday club meeting, the guys helped me load my van, I did a quick check of the hall, somebody made a good job of tidying the kitchen and Don has since asked me to thank the adults for leaving the hall clean and tidy, well you do don't you, respect and all that. And there goes another cool Saturday club meeting.
